Bunny rab’ts and LAPCATS part 2

This weekend is a great time to find the perfect loving, beautiful pet to adopt for your family. Both LAPCATS and the Sacramento House Rabbit Society are having adoption events to help you meet that special cat or rabbit.

For more information on the LAPCAT adoption event, click here.

The Sacramento House Rabbit Society will be holding an adoption event at the Petco onArden Way on Saturday, September 10, 2011.

Rabbits make wonderful pets but are not necessarily the appropriate animal for a household with small children, as bunnies need different care than a dog or cat might.

Brandon Chee, a SHRS volunteer, board member and resident web guru, says that the group will be there for adoptions, but also to “educate the public on the care & behavior of these” so-called  “exotic” animals.

The Sacramento House Rabbit Society is a volunteer-run non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and finding forever homes for abandoned rabbits. SHRS is also committed to educating people about the proper care of these unique, intelligent companions.

The SHRS also has a Facebook fan page and a Twitter site, in order to keep rabbit-lovers aware of local issues and adoptables.

Chee encourages the public to come and meet the fabulous foster rabbits they have for adoption.

All of the rabbits are already spayed (females) or neutered (males) and litter box trained. An adoption fee of $50.00 includes a wonderful, healthy rabbit and a copy of “The House Rabbit Handbook”.

Current bunny parents are should bring their rabbits to adoption clinics if they are interested in finding a friend for their rabbit.

All current and prospective bunny enthusiasts are welcome to stop by the adoption event for lively conversation, problem-solving and free information on the wonderful world of rabbits.

This adoption event takes place on the second Saturday of each month between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm and the locations may vary by date.

Adorable, sweet little fuzzy creatures that are full of love – we all hate them, right?  No, not true at all. And anyone seeking to enrich their family and their lives with a joyful, furry pet will find theSacramentoarea is the best place to be this weekend.

PetSmart stores across the country are celebrating a National Adoption Weekend beginning today and running through Sunday. On those days, every PetSmart store in the US will be hosting animal rescue groups in the hopes of finding permanent loving homes for thousands of pets.

The PetSmart in Elk Grove will be perfect place to find your dream cat or kitten during this weekend, with adoptables from LAPCATS in attendance.

LAPCATS is a non-profit organization which rescues some of the special felines who have been brought to the Sacramento County Animal Shelter but have not yet found homes.

All cats up for adoption through the group have been screened thoroughly for temperament and health while in the shelter, and while they are in sponsor (foster) care. The sponsor family evaluates the cats to learn their personalities, as well as seeing how the cats react to normal day-to-day situations with other people and pets.

According to Barbara Bowen-Doty, a volunteer with LAPCATS, this is a great weekend to find the ideal pet for you and your family. She particularly hopes to find good homes for “diva cats”, such as Serena, a gorgeous and incredibly loving long-haired tuxedo cat. Serena earned her diva status by expressing her opinion about other felines.

Bowen-Doty says that Serena “LOVES people but she HATES cats”, so she needs to be the only cat in the family.

The Sacramento House Rabbit Society is also having an adoption event this weekend; see part 2 of this story for details.

America, independence and animals

This weekend we celebrate the amazing achievements of those who brought liberty to this great country of ours. One thing our forefathers fought for was to provide us with the right “to pursue happiness” – and what makes a person happier than pure, true unconditional love?

Sacramento-area animal rescue groups know how you can celebrate that inalienable right. Pursue happiness by offering liberty to a needy animal and providing them with a life full of love.

Americans, Californians, Sacramentans are facing many challenges these days, and we often forget how lucky we are to live where we can exercise our free will.  When that free will is used in a positive, productive and community-affirming manner, our forefathers just have to be proud.

Many don’t have enough money to stretch beyond the basic, day-to-day care of their human families.  And many have been forced to give up their livelihoods, homes and beloved family pets because of the current economic situation.

Others have been able to hold on to at least some of those things, and may be able to stretch their resources just a little bit more.

One person can not fix the world, the economy or the cost of gas and groceries.  But one person can save the life of a loving animal.

And no, in the grand scheme of things, rescuing a needy, helpless animal may not be the most critical thing in the world. But if you are that one person who is willing and able to do it, you can make that one animal happy and receive much happiness yourself.

The pursuit of happiness. What an incredible opportunity, gift that is.

If you can share yourself and your life with a pet in need, you will have exercised one of the very rights that we are celebrating this weekend.

To find the cat, dog, rabbit, bird, lizard or other pet that is waiting for you, visit Petfinder.com

You can search by the type of animal, size, age and geographical location that you are interested in, and find the one who can bring you a good chunk of that hard-fought happiness.

Happy Independence Day.

“Super-mom” cats look for forever homes

As happens every year at this time, thousands are kittens are being born in the Sacramento area. And while people are eager to adopt the fluffy little ones, few consider the wonderful, caring moms that have nurtured and raised them.

But Trinity took over and nursed them back to health as if they were her own. Now that her natural and adopted kittens have moved on, young Trinity is “retired from nursing” and is ready to find a human family of her own.

Trinity is very sweet and affectionate, and would be an excellent and playful companion. Like all cats adopted through C.A.T.S., Trinity has been spayed/neutered, immunized and litter-box trained.

Trinity and other super-moms like Sushi, Sedona and Mocha, will be at the C.A.T.S. adoption center at PetSmart in the Natomas Marketplace this weekend.

Kittens are undeniably cute, but can also be plenty of work. Many require constant attention and have a tendency to, shall we say, reorganize your home as they zoom at full speed through your belongings.

It is also difficult to know what their personality will be like once they grow up; a cuddly, affectionate kitten may want less contact once they mature. Or maybe you’d prefer for a cat that isn’t stuck to your side at all times? That shy little kitten could actually be clingier as an adult.

Once a cat is a bit older, their personality is established and it is much easier to find the pet that suits your needs and lifestyle.

Andrea Phillips, adoption center manager for the non-profit C.A.T.S. (Cats about Town Society), says that a “super-mom cat” is the perfect way to go. Since female cats can become pregnant as young as 4-months, an experienced mother cat could still be a youngster herself.

Phillips says that Trinity, a gorgeous young tortoiseshell, as the perfect example of a supper-mom. C.A.T.S. rescued Trinity after the young cat was dumped along with her litter of kittens. While her babies were still little, several other sickly kittens were found without their mother. They were too little to be on their own and would have died.

But Trinity took over and nursed them back to health as if they were her own. Now that her natural and adopted kittens have moved on, young Trinity is “retired from nursing” and is ready to find a human family of her own.

Feline “speed bump” needs to dance the weight away

For some, 1970’s America means Watergate, the Love Canal and Kent State. But one awesome Sacramento cat only flashes on the transcendental strobe lights and funkadelic tones of Donna Summer playing on the 8-track.

Mimi is a stone fox, a real disco queen.

This sexy Siamese really knows how to boogie.  Ask around and you’ll hear that Mimi is always on the floor at Studio 54, showing the boys how to get down.  Sporting a killer mood ring, a fly Farrah ‘do and platform soles full of goldfish, this fine feline is certainly no Annie Hall.

Mimi, a fab full-figured chick, knows how to shake her thang like dy-no-mite.  She is known as “Speed Bump” because of how fast she can groove. NOT, as rumors suggest, because of the shape and size of her bitchin, curvy bod.

Okay, so some of that isn’t strictly accurate.

The truth is that beautiful Mimi can’t really dance that fast, mainly due to the poor care of her previous family. They constantly…

Frisky adoptable cat will be the major love of your life

Finding true love is often an important part of the search for people desiring a well-rounded life and personal fulfillment. One young man in Sacramento is ready to make that dream come true for just the right person.

“Major” is a generous and dashing fellow with a reputation for being an officer and a gentleman.  Although terribly handsome, he would rather make the world a better place than obsess about his looks.

Major’s men respect his leadership skills and commanding presence; they really appreciate him off-duty as well.  His late-night poker parties are legendary and he is known to be generous with the fine liquor and cigars in his private collection.

All the ladies adore this fine and frisky officer, who is known to dance, sing and party all night long. Although he loves to be the center of attention, he can melt any woman’s heart when he focuses his soft golden-brown eyes their way.

Major is a “decorated” officer; he is known far and wide for his decorative and sexy tabby coat.

Okay, so some of that story isn’t true.

Major wasn’t really in the military, he doesn’t smoke cigars and he really isn’t that good a dancer.

The young cat was abandoned by his owners, who were probably not the best parents a guy could have. Luckily Major was rescued by the non-profit group C.A.T.S., also known as the Cats about Town Society.

Andrea Phillips, volunteer adoption center manager for C.A.T.S., says “it took Major a while to realize that not all people are bad or mean”. But the love and attention he’s received from C.A.T.S. volunteers has really helped him learn to trust.

Major is a very sweet and loving cat; he deserves a home with people who will appreciate all he has to offer. He adores interacting with humans, gently head-butting and playing. And if you scratch his chin just right, he will be your love slave forever.

To meet Major, come to the Natomas Marketplace PetSmart this weekend between 11:00 A.M and 5:00 P.M. Major has already been neutered, immunized and flea/worm treated, and he is ready to go home with you.

Looking for true love? You can find it this weekend

True love and love at first sight are things that happen in movies and love stories, but are they actually possible in real life?  They are not only possible but are almost guaranteed if you come to the PetSmart in Natomas this weekend.

Relationships between people can be complicated and frustrating at times, but having a pet in your life is always a positive experience.  Why?

A pet is always happy to see you when you get home.

A pet doesn’t care if you have a bad hair day or haven’t shaved or showered.

A pet forgives you when you’re crabby.

A pet loves you even when you don’t feel loveable.

Your own true love could be waiting for you this weekend at the Cats about Town Society adoption center in the Natomas PetSmart.

A cat expresses himself and almost gets killed for it

Roman shows off his great smile while enjoying the attention from C.A.T.S. volunteers Dawn Wolfson and Andrea Phillips

Roman is a gorgeous and sweet feline whose typical cat behavior got him in trouble recently. One stroke of a paw led his owner to dump Roman off at a Sacramento animal shelter to be euthanized

Despite the owner’s insistence that Roman was a vicious beast that must be put down, the shelter staff did not put the cat to sleep.

When a pet is surrended to a shelter, the former owner no longer has a say in what happens to the animal. Shelter workers saw no sign of aggressive behavior from Roman, so they decided to give him a chance. They did behavioral testing with Roman in a number of ways, and found that he was a consistently pleasant cat.

So why was he slated for euthanasia?  As it turns out, the owner had not paid attention to the clues that cats give to people.

Since they can’t talk, animals use their bodies to express themselves.   If a cat is being petted, that doesn’t mean he wants to be petted endlessly. We all have limits.

So when the cat reaches his limit for that moment, he may twitch his tail, flatten his ears, stiffen up or turn his head away fast.

If the owner is paying attention, he will quickly see that the cat wants the petting to stop. In Roman’s case, an unsupervised child in the home had backed him into a corner and begun yanking on his ears and tail.  Roman gave all the hints that he didn’t like it – you would?  But the young boy didn’t know about such clues and the owner wasn’t even nearby.

Roman responded by reaching out his paw and…
